Download // Linux
On Linux
OPERATOR runs on Linux through Steam's Proton, and so does the pack. The launcher now runs on Linux too while we test it, and the small installer further down puts the same release on any distro with Steam, the Steam Deck included.
New // Being tested
The launcher for Linux
It's the same launcher as on Windows. It installs and updates the pack along with itself, and it doesn't need a Steam launch option.
It's new, so tell us on Discord if anything looks off, and if it gives you trouble the installer below still works.
Press Download
The file is launcher-linux, and your browser puts it in Downloads.
Open a terminal
On Linux Mint and Ubuntu it's Terminal in the app menu.
Paste this and press Enter
chmod +x ~/Downloads/launcher-linux && ~/Downloads/launcher-linuxPaste with Ctrl+Shift+V. The launcher opens and adds itself to your app menu, and from then on you start it from there.
Play
Press PLAY in the launcher. If OPERATOR has never been started on this PC, the very first start has no mods, so quit and press PLAY again.
01 // The installer
The Linux installer
One file you run from a terminal, once to install the pack and again whenever you want to update it. It needs Python 3, which Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora and SteamOS already come with.
Windows and Linux players can play together on the same pack version, and the installer's version number is the release it installs.
The pack is free, and so is every update after it. If you'd like to help with the server bill, there's a Patreon.
02 // Installing it
Six steps
Press Download
The file is odg-linux.py, and your browser puts it in Downloads, where you can leave it.
Open a terminal
On Linux Mint and Ubuntu it's Terminal in the app menu, and on a Steam Deck you switch to Desktop Mode and open Konsole.
Paste this and press Enter
python3 ~/Downloads/odg-linux.pyPaste with Ctrl+Shift+V, read the terms and type yes. It finds your game and downloads several gigabytes the first time, so leave it running until it tells you the pack is installed.
Add the launch option in Steam
In your Library, right-click OPERATOR and pick Properties, then paste this into Launch Options under General. Without it the game starts with no mods, and you only have to do it once.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="version=n,b" %command%Play
Start OPERATOR from Steam as usual. The first start takes a few minutes while the mod loader sets itself up, and the campaign is in the Ops Menu at the mission laptop once you're in.
Updating
Run the same line again and it only downloads what changed. Everything else it can do, like switching a mod off, is listed at the bottom of this page.
03 // If something's off
Five fixes
The game starts with no mods
The launch option is missing or has a typo in it, so copy it from step 04 again. Then run this, and it tells you what it can see and what needs changing.
python3 ~/Downloads/odg-linux.py statusIt can't find OPERATOR
Start the game once from Steam and run the line again. If it still can't find it, put --game and the game's folder on the end of the line, and Manage then Browse local files in Steam will open that folder for you.
python3: command not found
Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora and SteamOS come with Python 3 already. On another distro, install python3 from its software manager and run the line again.
On a Steam Deck
Run the installer in Desktop Mode, and the launch option carries over to Game Mode. You can also set it from Game Mode through the game's page, the gear and then Properties.
Don't use sudo
Run it as yourself. It refuses to run as root, because files made by root lock Steam out of the game folder.
04 // Commands
Everything else it does
Put a word on the end of the line from step 03. With nothing on the end, it installs or updates.
What's installed, and whether Steam is set up to load it.
Every mod in the pack, and whether it's on or off.
Switches a mod off, as in off "Third Person", and on switches it back. A few mods the pack depends on stay on.
Starts the game without any mods, and modded turns them back on.
Signs you in to your account, and signout forgets it.
Takes the pack off this PC, and your saves and settings stay where they are.
This list, in the terminal.
05 // Trouble
Run the line with status on the end and post what it prints in our Discord, and somebody will help you work out what's wrong.
